ABOUT THE WRITER hello! my name is erin, she/they, and i'm twenty-one years old. i've been writing carina since 2020 and she is one of my favorites muses ever. i am a full-time student with a part time job during the school year and employed full time during the summer. thus, reply speed will vary, but please feel free to ask my progress on it! i'm also totally not beneath replying to old threads <3

  • This is a sideblog and I follow back from my hub blog, @pandorasmusebox

  • This blog is 18+, no minors, as I am 21 years old and several threads may include nsfw content. I will typically tag along the lines of "blood tw", "suggestive tw", etc.

  • I have no strict unfollowing or blocking policy. Do as you will.

  • I am semi-selective & mutuals exclusive! I use my followers list to track who is interested in writing with me. If you're my mutual, feel free to DM me, send asks, do whatever! My discord is available upon request.

  • My portrayal of Carina takes major inspiration from the book, The Brightest Star in the North: The Adventures of Carina Smyth and minimally from Dead Men Tell No Tales. Her personality has been curated by myself based on my interpretation of her in her book. I am also aware that Carina was born in 1732, past the time of many canon characters, so I am 100% okay with disregarding canon time and making our own interpretation! I also know that MANY writers disregard DMTNT (it's okay, I know it's not the best), but please don't let that deter you from writing with me!

  • I am open to any ships! I request that we discuss them together to establish a dynamic. I'm comfortable with explicit sexual writing, but I also request that we already have an established relationship with our characters.

  • I write in a paragraph style, typically three to four paragraphs per reply. However, I am completely flexible and will do whatever you're comfortable with! My formatting will vary depending on my partner, but I typically use cut posts, small text, and an icon.

  • If you have a question about these rules, feel free to DM me! If you're a mutual and want to write, feel free to DM me or send an ask!

history & more

Palm branches swayed and gentle moonlight beams cast themselves down onto the island's children home, where the looming shadow of Captain Hector Barbossa left his infant child in a basket on the steps with a ruby-encrusted diary and simple note.
Her mother died. Her name is Carina Smyth.
Carina Smyth was often known as an orphan with the devil's tongue. At every children's home she occupied, she was admonished for her sharp wit, quick tongue, and curious nature that often led her to trouble. Even while growing up in the English countryside, Carina knew that a greater destiny was calling her, and its secrets lied within the diary her father left her as a baby, her orphan's token. She couldn't understand Italian, but she recognized astronomical diagrams and knew whatever lied within was her birthright.
“Maybe he is still alive, searching for me. He must be a very wise man. Not many people would leave their child a book with charts of the stars. Maybe he’s a scientist."
Lord Willoughby, benefactor of Benvolent Children's Home, allowed Carina to have a tutor from London twice a week to learn Italian, to decipher the words of Galileo Galilei, lessons she kept secret from her peers. She learned the origin of her name: the constellation of Carina, housing the brightest star in the north. Her best friend, James, feared her talking of stars, science, and magic, but Carina knew all of it was based in fact. The gravitas of the diary's contents became known to Carina when a group of festival workers sought to steal the diary from her, wishing to follow the Map No Man Can Read to an unknown treasure.
“This is why my father wanted me to have the diary! He wanted me to study the stars so I can seek the treasure. That is my birthright!”
At fourteen years old, Carina was sent to be a housemaid for Lady Devonshire of Hanover Hall, a woman of great wealth, well known in the society pages. Here, she discovered references of a powerful ancient treasure, the Trident of Poseidon, clarifying her birthright even further. She was meant to follow the map and find the treasure! That's what her father wanted for her!One night, Carina heard Lady Devonshire in the hall, a woman who moved around her home like a spirit, hardly visible by her own staff. She followed her into a great hall, where she came face-to-face with statues of great men of science: Nicolaus Copernicus, with an armilla; Sir Isaac Newton; and Galileo Galilei, holding the very ruby-encrusted diary she possessed from birth. The late night discovery led her to Lady Devonshire's observatory, littered with compasses, quadrants, a mechanized planetarium, astronomical diagrams, telescopes, armillary spheres, astrolabes, and a giant telescope propped against a window. Carina's heart was in the heavens, until she was caught by Lady Devonshire.Carina pleaded with Her Ladyship, begging her to allow her to stay and study the stars. The two came to an accord, in which Carina was allowed to stay if Lady Devonshire could study the diary of Galileo Galilei. Carina left notes for Her Ladyship, notes that were taken but not responded to, until she asked about the Map No Man Can Read. When Carina first requested to be Lady Devonshire's ward, she refused, telling Carina story of the Lord Devonshire, her brother, and how the two of them studied the heavens together. They charted comets, catalogued stars, accomplishments that led to the university naming stars after her brother, awarding him the university's highest honor, all while ignoring Lady Devonshire's contributions. When Lord Devonshire died, she wasn't even allowed to mourn him at the university, as it wasn't a woman's place.
"“This is what awaits you. Isolation. Ruin. The hand of God revealed to you in the stars only to be snatched away while you are told it was never yours to begin with.”
For four years, Carina Smyth lived as the ward of Lady Devonshire, studying astronomy and horology. The two of them studied the stars together, cataloguing celestial bodies, sending their contributions to the local university under false names, content that they could control the heavens and what was known of them. Against Lady Devonshire's wishes, Carina often disguised herself as a male university student to attend astronomy lectures, to learn more about subjects such as blood moons. One such lecture, led by Charles Swift of Saint Martin, was titled "LEGENDS OF THE HEAVENS: A DISCOURSE ON MYTHS, MAPS, AND BLOOD MOONS, FROM STUDIES PERFORMED IN THE CARIBBEAN”. In which a saying of the islands piqued Carina's interest, "all truths shall be revealed in the light of a blood moon," mirroring the words of Galileo. After the lecture, Carina met with Charles, who bid her farewell with the words of a Caribbean children's song,
“With the sea at your back and the wind in your sails,
though you be far from shore, you are never alone.
Simply look north, Carina prevails.
May the stars always shine and guide you toward home.”

The song led Carina to take a ship to Saint Martin, in search of the Map No Man Can Read and the Trident of Poseidon, her true birthright. Perhaps in the Caribbean she would fulfill her father's wish for her and make him proud, wherever he was.
 TRIVIA.

  • She absolutely despises the smell of lye. As a young girl, washing clothes was often her punishment due to her distaste for the smell.

  • One of Carina's favorite constellations is Orion, as it was commonly mentioned in Galileo's diary.

  • Her favorite weather is when there's just enough sun to warm one's hair and dampen one's hands, but a cool breeze rushes by to prevent either from becoming too bothersome.

  • More trivia to come <3

verses

CANON ill-mannered orphan.  — verse tag to be added
Focuses on Carina from the ages of eight to thirteen years. A sharp tongued orphan with a penchant for getting into trouble, Carina Smyth is attached to the token her father left her: a diary with a bright red ruby on the cover. She is often between children's home, being sent away due to her tendency for talking back.
 just the heavens.
Documents Carina's time employed at Hanover Hall & as Lady Devonshire's ward, from the ages of fourteen to eighteen years. After being sent to Hanover Hall to work as a lady's maid, Carina discovered Lady Devonshire's observatory and swiftly became her ward, cataloguing stars and sending their discoveries to the local university under false names. Quite the fan of dressing as a boy to attend astronomical lectures.
 not a witch.  —
FILM VERSE
Dedicated to fulfilling her father's wish and achieving her birthright, finding the Trident of Poseidon, Carina takes off for Saint Martin. Not long after she arrives, the locals accuse her of being a witch for being a woman of science, sentencing her to hang. This verse encapsulates the film, Dead Men Tell No Tales and any canon-divergent plots that may take place during the film's events.
my name is barbossa.  — potentially canon divergent
After the events of the movie. This verse is incredibly fluid because I find Carina's journey to find her father and then immediately losing him in the film incredibly dissatisfying.
POTC ALTERNATE UNIVERSE storms in your past.  —
Focuses on Carina from the ages of eight to thirteen years. Rather than being left on the steps of a children's home, Carina Barbossa is raised by her father. Swinging across the ship, performing any task she is given, the spunky, sharp-tongued young girl is a force to be reckoned with.
 filthy pirates.  —
A continuation of Storms in Your Past with a 14-18 year old Carina Barbossa, documenting her teenage years sailing the seas. Dedicated to studying the stars and the heavens, Carina also yearns for more responsibility, more authority on the seas.
 carina prevails.  —
A continuation of the Barbossa raises Carina alternate universe, with Carina Barbossa as a young woman & pirate.
ALTERNATE UNIVERSES i wish to nurture my mind.  — verse tag
A Bridgerton verse. Carina Smyth was orphaned as an infant, no mother to be found and rumor has it that her father is a wicked pirate sailing the seas. She has been taken in by society woman, Lady Devonshire, even though she does have a reputation for being a recluse and having a large telescope peering outside of her windows. Carina is not a young woman to steer clear of scandal. In fact, it isn't uncommon to spot a rather feminine voice piping up at the latest university lectures.
